Diamonds – Understand What You’re Investing In

The Ultimate Diamond Education Guide for Informed Buyers a diamond is more than just a sparkling gem—it’s a legacy, an emotional milestone, and a lifelong investment. Whether you're buying for an engagement, a gift, or to build your fine jewelry collection, understanding the science and art behind diamonds empowers you to make the right choice. At RosJuweliers, we believe in transparency and education. Here's everything you need to know before choosing the perfect diamond.

The 4Cs Explained – The Foundation of Diamond Grading

Understanding the 4Cs—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat—is essential. These criteria determine a diamond’s beauty, quality, and value.

Cut – The Sparkle Maker

  • Most important factor: It determines how brilliantly a diamond reflects light.
  • Grades: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
  • Why it matters: Even a high-color or clarity diamond will look dull if the cut is poor.
  • Tip: Prioritize cut above all. An Excellent or Very Good cut diamond will appear more brilliant, even if the other Cs are slightly lower.

Color – The Whiteness Scale

  • Graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).
  • D-F: Completely colorless and rare.
  • G-H: Near-colorless, great balance between quality and value.
  • I-J: Slight warmth, still beautiful, often excellent value in yellow or rose gold settings.
  • Tip: If you're setting your diamond in yellow or rose gold, you can choose a lower color grade like I or J and still achieve a stunning look.

Clarity – Flaws & Inclusions

  • Refers to natural imperfections inside (inclusions) or outside (blemishes) the stone.
  • Grades: FL (Flawless), IF, VVS1–VVS2 (Very Very Slight), VS1–VS2 (Very Slight), SI1–SI2 (Slightly Included), I1–I3 (Included).
  • Tip: Most inclusions are microscopic. VS2 or SI1 clarity often looks flawless to the naked eye but costs much less.

Carat Weight – Weight, Not Size

  • A carat is 200 milligrams, and not all carats look equal.
  • Diamond size also depends on cut and shape.
  • Example: A shallow-cut 1-carat may look larger but sparkle less.
  • Tip: Choose a carat weight just below common benchmarks (like 0.90 instead of 1.00) for better value without a visible size difference.
